Community Catalyst Awards
In collaboration with local Asian American, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) lesbian/ gay/ bisexual/ transgender/ queer (LGBTQ) organizations, the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA) is proud to present the third Community Catalyst Award Celebration. Join us on Saturday, July 30 at the Louis B. Mayer Lounge at the UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, 198 McAllister Street.
Our Community Catalyst Award is given to an individual or organization who has provided exemplary service to AAPI LGBT communities. This year, we are pleased to give the Community Catalyst Award to:
- Lance Toma and the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, a health services, education, research and policy organization for AAPIs, particularly those living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.
- Sống Thật Radio and Vuong Nguyen, groundbreaking radio program in Vietnamese raising awareness of LGBT issues in San Jose’s Vietnamese American community.
In addition to these outstanding Awardees, we will also recognize “Unsung Heroes” in our organizations who have been doing the work on behalf of AAPI LGBT communities. The event will be emceed by longtime community celebrity Tita Aida and South Asian leader Geena Dabadghav. Featured performers include the Rice Rockettes, and One Love Oceania.
We will also be inviting elected officials and dignitaries from the Bay Area’s AAPI and LGBT communities. We have been having conversations with the White House Office of Public Engagement and the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and expect to have representatives of the President’s Administration on hand as well. Leaders from AAPI and LGBT communities in the Bay Area are expected to be on hand, including: Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), Jane Kim,San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and Evan Low, City Council, Campbell, CA.
