History

For over 25 years, various convenings of LGBT APIs have sought to network leaders to enhance local grassroots organizing, and challenge homophobia and racism.

In this decade, leaders came together in Portland, OR in 2002, New York, NY in 2004, and Oakland, CA in 2005. Both 2002 and 2005 convenings were part of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force’s annual Creating Change conferences.

In 2005, leaders from 37 of the nation’s LGBT API organizations came together to build cross-organizational connections, share organizational successes and challenges, and lay the foundation for ongoing collaboration. That roundtable became NQAPIA.

NQAPIA was formed:

    (1) To connect LGBTQ API* organizations with each other for collaboration and collective identification on issues of common concern,
    (2) To build a strong foundation for collaboration and interaction with other communities,
    (3) To facilitate the work of collaborative projects that strengthen the LGBTQ API community, and
    (4) To support, nurture, and develop existing and emerging LGBTQ API leaders.

Let us do our work together.
