🌸 Beyond the Pattern: Queer Hmong Perspectives in Dialogue 🌸

Join us on IG Live for a powerful conversation with Nou-Chee Chang (@justnouch), Seng Xiong (@xo.seng), and Asialyn Lee (@asia.three). Together, these three queer Hmong Americans will reflect on what it means to carry refugee and immigrant histories while navigating queerness, family, and tradition in the diaspora.

Nou-Chee Chang (she/they) is a Hmong Minnesotan queer artist and scholar. A graduate student and zine artist, their work focuses on Southeast Asian memory and media.

Seng Xiong (they/she/he) is a queer second-generation Hmong American community & art advocate from the Twin Cities. Their work spans LGBTQ+ cultural competencies, BIPOC healing circles, and Hmong queer artist cohorts, and they are currently pursuing an MSW to become a therapist centering LGBTQ+ care, family systems, and decolonized healing.

Asialyn Lee (she/they) is a first-generation queer Hmong American from California’s Central Valley. With a background in community organizing, local government leadership, and nonprofit service, she brings experience in equity advocacy, representation, and creative accessibility.

From memory work and art-making, to healing justice and community organizing, to shaping policy and representation—each panelist brings a unique perspective on resilience, belonging, and queer futures in Hmong communities. The conversation will be moderated by NQAPIA’s Programs Manager, Mai Li O’Keefe.

This week, Frederick Tran (@nqapia Communications & Development Manager/social media gay™️) joined @searac and a powerful cohort of Southeast Asian advocates from across the country for this year’s Leadership & Advocacy Training (LAT).

Together, we stepped onto Capitol Hill not just to advocate for immigration, health, and education policies — but to remind this country that our communities have been here for generations and we’re not done fighting for each other.

This year marks 50 years since Southeast Asian refugee resettlement began in the U.S. — a history shaped by war, displacement, survival, and the unwavering will to build new futures. 50 years later, our communities continue to resist deportations, demand dignity, and stand in solidarity with all immigrants and refugees.

Through every meeting, every story shared, every hallway conversation, and every late night karaoke session — we felt what collective liberation looks like in practice: showing up for one another, holding space for our grief and our joy, and organizing so no one gets left behind.

Deep gratitude to the staffers and elected leaders who welcomed our stories — and to every advocate who brought their full selves to this space.

We carry our roots. We build our power. We fight for each other’s freedom.

“We are in the margins of the margins. And so much of liberation work comes from there.”

As we close out on the 50th anniversary of April 30, @srirachalovingdragon reminds us that queer Vietnamese people are not only shaped by history - we are active participants in transforming it.

We come from legacies of resistance: overthrowing MULTIPLE colonizers, building movements, and surviving systems that were never built for us. Even when our histories are erased or denied, we carry the knowledge and strength of our ancestors forward.

We know where we come from. And together, we will move towards a future rooted in connection, in care, and in collective power.

“South Việt Nam was never really a democracy… so our people don’t really know what democracy is.”

On this day, April 30, we mark 50 years since the fall of Sài Gòn - what many in the Vietnamese diaspora call Black April (Thắng Tư Đen). It’s a day of mourning, memory, and reckoning with the legacy of war, displacement, and political loss.

Prior to philanthropy, she’s been a public school teacher, dabbled in national digital campaigns and local politics, moonlighted as an under-the-table nanny among many other adventures. In her spare time, she’s putting sriracha on things and dragging toxic Viet patriarchy for filth as a drag king.

🏙️ @tbinhly is a gay affordable housing professional working at NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development. Born and raised in Northern Virginia, he stays connected to his community by co-leading outreach and communication work with the @avietplace —a volunteer grassroots organization that recently mobilized to prevent the displacement of over 120 predominantly small Vietnamese businesses.

🌈 @epicuyen MA, MPH (she/they) is a second generation, Queer Vietnamese American from Garden Grove, CA. They currently are the Executive Director of @vietrainbowoc , a grassroots organization that is grounded in equity, healing, joy, and social justice and builds community and mobilizes intergenerationally. Uyen holds an M.A in Asian American Studies, an M.P.H. in Community Health Sciences, and a B.A. in International Development Studies from UCLA. Most importantly, they are a doting dog mom of 2 adorable pug mixes.

Based in the Twin Cities and originally from the Columbia River Gorge, Heidi brings over 7 years of experience in legal, finance, HR, and operations work—grounded in deep commitments to justice, care, and queer liberation.

From organizing for farmworker and migrant justice to working in public defense and LGBTQ+ advocacy, Heidi’s background reflects a powerful blend of heart and hustle. When they’re not making sure our team gets paid and supported, you can find Heidi hiking with their disabled pup, cuddling cats and chickens, or tackling ambitious home DIY projects with their spouse Sophia (HGTV, call them!).

We’re so excited to have Heidi stewarding the backbone of our operations with joy, care, and precision. 🤩

🌟 Meet Mai Li O’Keefe (they/them), our new Programs Manager!

Based in Portland, Oregon, Mai Li is a non-binary Korean adoptee whose deep roots in community organizing and mutual aid align powerfully with our mission. After supporting NQAPIA as the Event Planner for the 2025 Creating Change Asian American Institute, they’ve now officially joined us full time and have been bringing their brilliance to the team for the past six weeks.

With years of experience co-founding BIPOC Adoptees and Open Slopes PDX, Mai Li brings a thoughtful, intersectional lens to everything they do. When they're not making magic behind the scenes, you can find them skiing, bikepacking, singing karaoke, or enjoying a good movie and meal. 🍜🎤🎿

We’re so grateful to have Mai Li helping lead the way for our programs and our community. 💫
